Afghanistan secured a decisive seven-wicket victory over Papua New Guinea, knocking New Zealand out of the T20 World Cup 2024. The match took place at the Brian Lara Stadium in Tarouba, Trinidad. With this win, Afghanistan smoothly advanced to the Super 8 stage, while the Kiwis lost their chance to progress in the tournament. Afghanistan chased down the modest target of 95 runs in 15.1 overs, losing only three wickets. Openers Rahmanullah Gurbaz (7) and Ibrahim Zadran (0) were dismissed early, but Gulbadin Naib's unbeaten 49 runs off 36 balls, featuring four fours and two sixes, secured the win. Earlier, Afghanistan's bowlers dominated, dismissing PNG for just 95 runs in 19.5 overs. PNG struggled from the start, falling to 17-4 in the fourth over. Kiplin Doriga top-scored for PNG with 27 runs off 32 balls. Afghanistan's pacer Fazalhaq Farooqi shone with figures of 3-16 in four overs, earning him the Player of the Match award. Farooqi expressed his pride in the team's achievement, saying, "I want to congratulate the entire team because we have now officially qualified for the Super 8. I feel proud. Before the warm-up match, I was in the IPL but didn’t get many chances. I just tried to keep it simple and focused on taking wickets if there was movement or swing. If not, I went to plan B, avoiding boundaries. We have to give our 100% and will try our best in the last match as well." With this victory, Afghanistan and the West Indies are the two teams advancing from Group C to the Super 8 stage, while PNG and New Zealand are eliminated from the tournament.
